Robert Yale Richardson

Robert Yale Richardson is retired from thirty-five years as the prepress manager for Tidewater Direct in West Branch, Iowa. His focus in retirement is on painting and drawing with watercolors, pastels and ink. 2004-05 he contributed a weekly editorial cartoon in the Iowa City Press Citizen under the name rytoonz. Robert teaches an evening class, “Cartooning for Beginners,” through the Coralville Parks and Recreation Department. His art will be on display in the Senior Center’s assembly room for the event. Visit his website at rytoonz.wordpress.com.

September Art In the Afternoon

Latif Behroz

Latif Behroz is a peace volunteer who has done “art and graffiti for peace”; a series of paintings on walls in Kabul, Afghanistan. Along with his activist friends, Latif has also set “The Kindness Wall of Kabul”: a painted wall where people can leave clothes and other items for those in need. (The wall is featured in The New York Times, March 24, 2016). Latif is currently a student at Scattergood Friends School in West Branch and wants to continue the Kindness Wall project here in Iowa City.

June Art In The Afternoon

Fatima Saeed

Fatima Saeed is a Sudanese artist who uses Nubian themes in three-dimensional sculptures of leather, fabric and paper. Watercolor, fabric dye and glitter are used to enhance the designs. Her program “Coloring for Peace” with children and teens at Iowa UNA was a great success.

The Art of Found Objects
with Marge Clancy

MargeDiscover how simple items from nature can become works of art. Driftwood or leaves can become her canvas. Since the ’70’s Marge has created the costumes for High School, Community Theater and Riverside Theater productions. The plays include Guys & Dolls, Bus Stop, Naughty Marietta and many more. A backdrop she made for the band, Dogs On Skis, is in Okoboji Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Now, her talents have turned toward her natural art.

February Art In The Afternoon

Marcia Wegman Art In The Afternoon

Marcia Wegman will give an overview of her development as an artist from graduate school in printmaking at the University of Iowa to a full time professional artist today. Marcia will briefly touch on the many different mediums she has explored leading up to dry pastels and acrylic paint currently used. On display will be a few framed Iowa pastel landscapes and images of some of the pastel paintings done over the past few years.

Beyond the Studio

The ArtiFactory visits Public Space One for January’s  Art in the Afternoon

Possibility at Public Space One

This month’s program will feature artist-organizers, with a panel of PS1-affiliated visual artists: Hannah Givler, Lauren Frances Evans, Sayuri Sasaki Hemann, and Emily Jalinsky. They will share their individual work and open a broader conversation on art collaboration, organizing, and community, and how it relates to, integrates with, and/or collides with their studio practices.

There will also be the opportunity to tour PS1 and view the group exhibition Pitch In!, curated by another PS1 artist-organizer, C.R. Cooper.

Mary Merkel-Hess WebArt

Mary Merkel-Hess will show images from her 30+ years as a paper artist. She will discuss her process and sources of inspiration as well as her installations at the Marriott in Coralville, at Oaknoll Retirement Residence in Iowa City and other places.

Pieces by Mary have appeared in many national and international exhibitions. Her work is in permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Art and Design in New York, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, Mass. and the Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.

AGELESS ART: The Oaknoll Collection

“Art heals the soul and frees the mind. Art tells a story that words cannot always express.  Art is ageless, timeless, and has no boundaries.”  Megan Bishop

Megan Bishop is an Iowa City artist who, at a young age, taught painting to her cancer-stricken grandfather.  She witnessed the way it comforted him and was then led to work with seniors in our community.  Megan will talk about her teachings at Oaknoll Retirement Community while highlighting the paintings of her students. The artists themselves will be on hand to tell us their stories and share their work.
