Beginning Chinese Ink Painting

Learn the ancient art of Chinese ink painting from Truc Deegan. She studied under Mr. Ang Swee Hin who is a master of Chinese Art in the style of 12th-18th century artists. By its completion all the basic brush strokes used in this art form will have been studied, and four traditional paintings will have been completed.

Beginning Chinese Ink Painting

The Beginning Chinese Ink Painting class is postponed due the predicted bad weather on Sunday. It will begin on Sunday February 24th and run the four Sundays to March 17th.

  • Fee $140 (plus $60 supply fee or a list to buy your own)
  • Pay the instructor at the first class

About the Artist

Trúc was born and grew up in Vietnam.  Trúc (pronounced Chook and it means Bamboo) migrated to the United States of America and became a citizen in 1970. She graduated in University of Iowa in Art History with Honors. She studied under Mr. Ang Swee Hin who lives in Penang, Malaysia, a master of Chinese Art with the knowledge of the style of the 12th-18th century artists.

Trúc has held a number of one woman exhibitions and participated in numerous competitive and judged exhibitions as well.  She has taught brush painting in the United States, Malaysia and Sri Lanka.  Her works have been purchased by art lovers around the world and are found in collections in Malaysia, Great Britain, France, Australia, Sri Lanka, the United States and elsewhere.  In 2001 the Iowa City Public Library selected one of her works for its permanent collection.  In 2002 one of her paintings received an Honorable Mention Prize at the Hooverfest.  In 2012 Art of Mercy Hospital collected two of her works for their art collection.

Many of her works are on display at Melrose Meadow, a retirement community at 350 Dublin Drive, Iowa City, Ia.  Recently, She had a joint show titled Midwest Summer: Light & Warm with other artists at the Iowa at Cedar Rapids Museum of Art.  Her latest exhibition was held in Central College, Pella, Iowa in Nov. 2016.

September Art In the Afternoon

Latif Behroz

Latif Behroz is a peace volunteer who has done “art and graffiti for peace”; a series of paintings on walls in Kabul, Afghanistan. Along with his activist friends, Latif has also set “The Kindness Wall of Kabul”: a painted wall where people can leave clothes and other items for those in need. (The wall is featured in The New York Times, March 24, 2016). Latif is currently a student at Scattergood Friends School in West Branch and wants to continue the Kindness Wall project here in Iowa City.

  • Friday June 2
    • 5 pm to 8 pm: David Luck will be doing a “Double Loop Chain Making Demo” in silver wire.
  •  Saturday June 3 
    • 11 am to 2 pm: Deanne Wortman and an engineering students. They will be doing activities with tessellations and box puzzles. She will also bring one of Eric Wortman’s marble machines.
    • 2 pm to 5 pm: Marilyn Moore will be leading 2 different “weaving” projects with kids. One uses foam cups. The other is on a large scale with hoops and weaving materials.
    • 5 pm to 7 pm: Bob Richardson will offer cartooning instruction.

February Art In The Afternoon

Marcia Wegman Art In The Afternoon

Marcia Wegman will give an overview of her development as an artist from graduate school in printmaking at the University of Iowa to a full time professional artist today. Marcia will briefly touch on the many different mediums she has explored leading up to dry pastels and acrylic paint currently used. On display will be a few framed Iowa pastel landscapes and images of some of the pastel paintings done over the past few years.
